Crystal Clear Hawaii Waters
One of the greatest benefits of living in Kailua-Kona is the easy access to world-class swimming, whether you're gliding through calm ocean waters or doing laps in a local pool.
TWO OF THE MOST POPULAR KONA SWIMMING SPOTS ARE:
Kailua Bay: Made famous by the IRONMAN™ World Championship, Kailua Bay offers a truly iconic ocean swim. While the race-day spectacle of thousands of athletes charging into the water is unforgettable, most mornings are much calmer. Dozens of locals and visitors gather daily at the Kailua Pier for open water swims, often forming informal groups for safety and camaraderie.
Important reminder: Never swim in the ocean alone—always go with others.
Kona Community Aquatic Center: Located just up the road from the pier, this public pool is a top-notch outdoor facility offering lap swimming and training for all skill levels. Home to several local swim clubs—including youth and masters programs—it’s a great place to build your technique, meet fellow swimmers, and gain the skills needed to transition into ocean swimming safely.
Whether you’re training for your first triathlon or simply want to enjoy the water, Kona is a fantastic place to swim year-round. Scroll below for local swim events, programs, and tips for getting started.
